Site Investigations:
To better understand how the site conditions can express the intended program, a trip to the intended project location was required. Within this week, the existing site was documented through photo and video to understand the needs of the site and potential pieces of the program required by local residents. Interviews were had with artists and curators within the city to better understand current local issues. Each Workday is itemized below as a means of reference.
Site Investigation - Day 1 - Photos and Walkthrough
To comprehend the history of the project site, the National Library was visited. It was vital to understand which issues have caused the area to change, how the area is being viewed, and whether there was any intention to develop additional buildings within the site.
The locations for potential infill programs were visited and analyzed, understanding whether these sites needed to become buildings or spaces to best utilize the existing infrastructure. It was also found that there were existing buildings whose replacement could equally improve the area
Site Investigation - Day 2 - Arcade and Portal Visit
The second day of investigation included visiting the 6th Avenue Arcade and the Post Office Building being utilized as the School of Art. The Arcade is situated between Parque Central and Parque Centenario and is the most modern addition to the site, finished in 2022.
The Arcade Walkway provides a 360 view of the area. Allowing for visitors a new dimension to the city center.
From local residents it was found that the Post Office has been used by local art students, and artists as a studio space, but recently, the Department of Communications has requested the space back to utilize as offices.
Site Investigation - Day 3 - MUSAC Interviews and Walkthrough
To better understand the issue faced by residents, artists and curators were interviewed at the MUSAC. As part of a collaborative walkthrough, a group of students, artists and curators walked through the spaces at the Museum dedicated to the University of San Carlos. Portions of the Walkthrough resulted in Interview Style Questions and Responses were Recorded and Itemized Below.
Question 1 - How do you feel about the current art spaces within the city of Guatemala?
Question 2 - What dedicated spaces are found within the city of Guatemala for the creation of Art?
Question 3 - Are residents expected to be able to renew their stay at the Post Office?
Question 4 - Which spaces exist within the city to demonstrate Art created?
Synthesis - Translating all this information into an thesis abstract
Site Investigation - Day 4 - Site Documentation
As a result of the information found, a final site visit was required to walk the space again with the intention of recording the park in its use, understanding orientation of the existing infrastructure and potentials for new spaces.
